- Course objectives
- The course provides a comprehensive overview of Greek and Roman mythology. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to understand the impact of Ancient mythology on visual arts and literature as well. The course is supported by an electronic version of the course: http://www.phil.muni.cz/elf/course/enrol.php?id=521. At the end of this course, students will be well have an understanding of the system of classical mythology and relevant secondary literature in order to to find basic information about any ancient mythological character. Moreover, students will also be able to interpret the characters inspired by antiquity in the modern visual arts.
- Syllabus
- 1.-2. Greek cosmogony.
- 3.-5. Olympian gods.
- 6.-9. The gods of the sea (Poseidón, Amfitríté, Pontos, Ókeanos, Atlás, Ínó, Trítón, Proteus, Glaukos).
- 10.-12. The earthly deities (Gáia, nymfy, Rheiá, Kybelé, Dionýsos, Satyrs, Silénos, Pán, Priápos, Démétér, Centaurs).
