Course objectives
After the completion of the course the students will be able to:
understand better the character of contemporary German philosophy
explain basic courses of social and political philosophy in Germany today
define the main differences among particular authors and their conception of social-political issues – the question of individualisation, social justice, equality, democracy, citizens´ participation in political power, public politics, national state, European integration, globalization
interpret the conception of the social and political philosophy of U. Beck, J. Habermas, A. Honneth, and P. Sloterdijk

  • 1. Is there anything specifically German about contemporary German philosophy?
  • 2. Critical reflexion of the present without using the prefix „post“: theory of the second modern and container national state. (Ulrich Beck)
  • 3. Risk society: poverty is hierarchical, smog is democratic. (Ulrich Beck)
  • 4. Globalization as a fact and as an ideological construction. (Ulrich Beck)
  • 5. Individualization. (Ulrich Beck)
  • 6. The world of critical theory. (The Frankfurt school)
  • 7. Democracy and the public in debate. (Jürgen Habermas)

Teaching methods
lecture, discussion, written essay
Assessment methods
End of term: oral knowledge-based exam.
Before the exam itself: written essay - at least 4 pages.
Topic: a student chooses the topic, which will be approved by a tutor before the end of the course.
The essays will involve a proclamation that the author used only sources stated in a list of literature and that neither the essay or its part has been used in order to receive other credits within the study at Masaryk University.
The essay has to be submitted by 6 January 2013.
Another important condition for passing the exam is knowledge of compulsory literature.
