Course objectives
The seminar is connected with the basic linguistic preparation and is considered to be an introduction to problems of specialized translation. Students get acquainted with the basic characteristics of the style of the professional literature in the Czech and the Russian language. Work during these seminars will teach students to analyse a special text, to understand its specific features and to translate adequately from the source language (foreign) into object language (home language). Methods of translation are learnt from texts of administrative and management problematic, primarily from the field of social work and security. Functional grammar and lexicology: mastering of basic linguistic instruments in the special text, application of appropriate technical standards for formal editing of the specialized translation. Grammatical phenomena found in lexical material of this subject. Work with dictionaries is accented.
Syllabus
  • week 1-2: The outline of development of main contemporary theories of translation. Interpretation of fundamental conceptions of theory and technique of translation
  • week 3-4: The fundamental conception of theory of translation (principles of the translation process, a conception of equivalence of translation).
  • week 5-6: The fundamental classification and typology of translation (types of translation according to genre and stylistic specifics of a translated text, according to a type of translational segmentation, etc.).
  • week 7-8: Theoretical and transformational problems of a translation process
  • week 9-10: Characteristics of a scientific style in the hierarchy of functional styles
  • week 11-12: Questions of translation of scientific and technical texts. Translation of texts from the thematic field of Health Service
