- Course objectives
- Upon completion of this course the student will have a general knowledge of sociolinguistic and dialectological methods of research and will be able to carry out a simple case study of a chosen sociolinguistic phenomenon.
- Syllabus
- 1.The history of dialectology: methodologies (SuRE) 2.Dialectology and Sociolinguistics: from rural to urban. 3.The ‘BBC Voices’ project. 4.Social differentiation and language: age and sex. 5.Social differentiation and language: education, work, and social class. 6.Observing language change: apparent-time and real-time change. 7.Sociolinguistic and geographical diffusion. 8.Language standardisation and prescription: history. 9.Language standardisation and prescription: present & future. 10.Received Pronunciation: history. 11.Received Pronunciation: present & future; Upton’s model.
