Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain some conceptions and topics of the psychology of art; to make deductions based on acquired knowledge; to interpret the work of art.
Syllabus
  • 1. An artist and his personality. A biography of artist
  • 2. Psychology and art creation process. Art and self-expression.
  • 3. Work of art and its psychological structure.
  • 4. Work of art and its reception. Aesthetic perception.
  • 5. Expression as an liminal notion of psychology and art history and theory.
  • 6. Work and sign. Languages of arts. Psychosemiotics of art.
  • 7. Literature, fine arts, music, film, theatre.
  • 8. Symbol, metaphor and metonymy. Story and myth. Dialog and dramatic play. Genre and style.
  • 9. Selected approaches in the field of psychology of art.
  • 10.What do we do while we are interpreting?
  • 11. Psychological interpretation: examples.

Seminar essay (interpretation of selected work), oral exam (discussion on the seminar paper, knowledge test); score: 70 percent or higher on the final exam.
