Course objectives
Lectures will focus on widescreen format and its use in Czechoslovak cinema from the beginnings until 1970. First lectures will be dedicated to the issues of format and standardization, as well as the history of non-standard formats in cinema in general. Following lectures will follow the very beginnings of the format in Czechoslovak cinema, from the point of view centralized film industry taking care of film production, distribution and adaptations of theatres, as well as the reflection of the new format in trade and popular press. On several case studies of Czechoslovak widescreen films, we will examine the development of means of expression connected to this format.

The main objectives of the lecture are following:
- to raise avareness of the widescreen format;
- to deepen knowledge of Czech and Czechoslovak cinema;
- to master the problematics of technological history of cinema.
