Course objectives
The aim of the Seminar is on providing students with insight views into the reality of the lives of the “common” people. It’s mainly about understanding better which concrete impacts have had the waves of “big history” on the inhabitants of the Bohemian Lands, especially on those living in its ethnically mixed, according to current terminology in its multicultural areas.
Syllabus
  • The Seminar is held as part of the new studying program specializing in „Modern History and multicultural society“ and is the second part of the course taking place during the previous semester. The second part, however, is not concentrating anymore on providing students with the basic “hard facts” about general political and social developments, but on analyzing concrete forms of living together and everyday life between Czech and German speakers on the territory of the Bohemian lands during the turbulent times from the thirties to the beginning of the fifties of the 20th century. This period is defined from the year of the overwhelming victory of Konrad Heinlein’s Sudeten German Party (1935) until the beginning of the fifties, when – after several waves of escape, forced expulsions and emigration stimulated by the general postwar circumstances – only a small part of the former German population was left in Czechoslovakia.
  • Emphasize will be put mainly on the situation of some selected subgroups and the relationships of their members with the other inhabitants. To be more precise, in the focus of the Seminar will be those Germans who stayed opposed to the Henlein movement and nacism (so-called antifascists), the members of so-called ethnically mixed marriages, Czech and German autochthonous settlers in the borderlands, specialists, Austrians, Reichsdeutsche, prisoners of war, the convicted prisoners of postwar retribution and other Germans who stay in Czechoslovakia after the ending of the mass transfer. Among Czechs, in the center of interest will be new settlers coming from the Bohemian and Moravian interior, but reemigrants originating from abroad, as well. With regards to historical developments of the selected period, it is necessary to consider also the fates of the Jewish as well as the ethnically indifferent population living in the Hultschin, Teschen and Weitra region. An object of analysis will also be the Croats living in Southern Moravia.
  • The heuristical base of the course is gained, apart from the general literature on the subject presented already during the first part, mainly from studying personal eye witness reports and selected archival documents, which will be handed over to the students during the semester. The course is held in Czech language and is managed by two scholars teaching simultaneously. Having attended the first part of the Seminar is not a condition for attending its second par.
