Course objectives

The subject is conceived as an introduction to the main forms and themes of early Christian literature. Special attention will be given to the question of continuity or discontinuity with the literary heritage of the Antiquity. We will work with translations, therefore students without the knowledge of source languages are welcome to enroll for this lecture. The main aim of this subject is to provide students with an introduction to the independent reading and study of early Christian literature. Varied selection of the texts will introduce students to the main questions of early Christian literary production and literary genres characteristic for these works. The students will be provided with basic overview of the secondary literature and will be lead to independent analysis of the text with special attention to the problem of continuity or discontinuity with the literary heritage of the Antiquity.

Syllabus

• - definition of the term "early Christian literature" and "patrology" - Christian epistula and its specifics (private correspondence vs. literary letter) - double method of commenting the Scripture (commentaries, homilies) - apologetics (polemic with Gnostics) - spiritual and ethical themes - hymns and liturgies - dogmatic disputations and their reflection in literary works
