Course objectives
Main objectives of the course can be summarized as follows:
- to present an overview of Latin literary production in Europe from the late antiquity (with special regard to patristics) to the 11th century
- to recognize specific features of medieval literature
- to describe the following genres: hagiography, historiography, and secular and religious lyrics
Syllabus
  • 1) The most important genres of Medieval Latin literature and their development
  • 2) Specific features of medieval literature
  • 3) Preconditions of literary development in the late Roman period
  • 4) Overview of Latin patristics
  • 5) The so-called interim period in different parts of Europe
  • 6) 9th-10th century - Carolingian and Ottonian Renaissance
  • 7) 11th century - the beginnings of golden age of medieval Latin literature
