Prerequisites
The course "Latin for students of Romance studies I" is aimed for graduates, non-graduates and complete beginners. Previous knowledge of Latin is therefore not required.

Course objectives
The course aims at providing students with the basics of Latin grammar system. Students will master the principles of Latin grammar system, including understanding elementary texts, that will give them a good basis for the study of historical developments in the individual Romance languages. During the first semester of this course students will master grammar and vocabulary of the first 12 units of the required textbook (Špaňár - Kettner, Latina pro gymnázia).
Syllabus
  • Latin and its evolution, periods, pronunciation, alphabet. Grammatical categories of nouns, basic terminology. Morphology: nouns - declensions 1.-5.; adjectives and comparison of adjectives; present participle; adverbs; personal pronouns; verbal conjugations - all forms of the present, imperfect and future indicative tense; deponent verbs; the verb "esse"; numerals.

Teaching methods
During the seminar, individual grammatical features are explained and practised (translations, grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: successful scores in a final test at the end of the course and one test administered during the semester (passing limit 65%); both tests are in written form; regular class attendance (75%).
