Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
reproduce nominal and verbal paradigms studied within the course (see syllabus of the course);
explain grammatical rules studied within the course;
use basic Latin grammatical terminology associated with the grammar studied within the course;
recognize grammatical categories of the morphological forms studied within the course;
translate easy Latin sentences into Czech;
describe grammatical structure of a clause.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronuntiation and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with Czech. Introduction to declension and conjugation.
  • 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of agent.
  • 2nd declension nouns, 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Verb esse, compounds of the verb esse. Adverbs of 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 3rd declension nouns.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 3rd declension adjectives, present participle and its use.
  • Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative prononus.
  • 4th and 5th declension, demonstrative pronouns.
  • Interrogative and relative pronouns, relative clauses; negative pronouns.
  • Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.

Teaching methods
During the seminar, individual grammatical features are explained and practised (translations, grammar exercises). Regular class attendance and homework are required.
Assessment methods
Requirements for successful completion of the course: passing the final written test (passing score: 70%); filling in questionnaires available in the IS (minimum passing score: 70%); active class participation.
