- Course objectives
- Seminar will be aimed at negative utopia genre in Czech literature. First lessons will be devoted to utopias as general, its definition, function and place in a genre system. After that, the genre of negative utopia will be introduced, using some works of world literature (1984, Brawe New World, Lord of the Flies) as a typical example. The attention will be also paid to possible classifications of negative utopias. In the rest of the lessons, outstanding Czech negative utopian works will be analyzed.
At the end of this course the student will be able:
- to think about utopia, utopianism and its role in society;
- to characterize the genre of utopia and negative utopia;
- to understand the changes of genre of negative utopia in Czech 20th century literature;
- to analyze the negative utopian fictions with regard to its inner structure and historical context. - Syllabus
