Course objectives
The course aims to line up an overview of the history of Czech cinema before 1945. In four basic periods (cinema before 1918, silent cinema of the 1920s, coming of sound and 1930s, Protectorate), Czech cinema will be examined from the point of view of the actual government, and its place in the society. Cinema production, distribution and exhibition will be examined closely.

Main objectives:
to gain basic orientation in the history of Czech cinema before 1945;
to understand the place of the cinema in the wider social context;
to see the cinema as a complex social phenomenon, not as a sequence of aesthetically exceptional films;
to learn about the relations between production, distribution and exhibition of films;
to widen existing knowledge of films before 1945 by screening lesser-known pictures.
