Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:

Reach at least intermediate-high level of speaking;
Talk about professional topics or topics relating to current issues/news;
Understand the main idea of the text regarding various topics of social issues;
Improve the speed of reading Chinese text and acquire basic reading skills;
Present his/her own opinion regarding specific social issues to the audience.
Syllabus
  • Week 1+2 Course introduction; Unit 1-1 (culture differences and mutual influences)
  • Week 2+3 Unit 1-2 (culture differences and mutual influences)
  • Week 3+4 Unit 2-1 (beggars in China and related social issues)
  • Week 5+6 Unit 2-2 (beggars in China and related social issues)
  • Week 7+8 Unit 3-1 (marriage of age difference)
  • Week 9+10 Unit 3-2 (marriage of age difference)
  • Week 11+12 Unit 4-1 (politics and morality)
  • Week 13+14 Unit 4-2 (politics and morality); oral presentation

Attendance:
2 unexcused absences are allowed.
4 absences may result in a failure in the course.
3 late arrivals (longer than 15 minutes after the class starts) may be counted as 1 absence.
Inadequate preparation of the class (including quizzes and preview) would be taken as absence.
In case of illness or other extenuating circumstances, the student must present documented evidence of inability to attend classes to the class instructor. However, in such cases the student is responsible for all work missed during those absences.
