Course objectives
Upon the sucsesful completation of this course the students will be able to discuss the development of the Arabian world and how it was affected by the preceeding civilizations of the Near East, by Greek and Roman culture and Christianity. The students will gain insight into the pantheon of the Pre-Islamic Arabic deities. This will allow him/her to see the roots of Islam and muslim civilization in greater detail and compare it adequately with the Christian civilization in Europe. Understanding Arabic culture in the Antiquity involves identifying its ties to other ancient civilizations rather than approaching to it in isolation. This in turn will help the student to explain the basic ethical and social values of the early Islam.
Syllabus
  • 1) The natural conditions in the Arabian peninsula. The main sources of Arabic history.
  • 2) The oldest kingdoms in the South of Arabian peninsula. Their government, society and economy.
  • 3)Arabic tribes according to the Asssyrian and Egyptian sources and in the Bible.
  • 4)The oldest gods of Pre-Islamic Arabs.
  • 5) The Arabs in the works of Greek and Roman authors.
  • 6) The state of Nabataens, the influence od Hellenism and Roman empire. The province Arabia.
  • 7) The Arabs in the provinces of Roman East. Their life under the Roman influence. Conversion to the Christianity.
  • 8) Arabs as the foederati of Roman state. Their significance in the Roman army and administration. Philip the Arab.
  • 9) Ghassanid Arabs and Arabs of Hira }(Lakhmids).
  • 10) The role of Arabs in the military coflicts between Eastern Roman Empire and the Persia in the 6th century.
  • 11) The oldest Arabian poetry, the etique of the tribal Arabs and the life in Hegaz before the islamization.
  • 12) Muhammmad, his life and activity. The origin of umma.
  • 13) The relationships to the Jews, Christians and heathens.
  • 14) Islam, Judaism and Christianity.
