Course objectives
The purpose of the seminar is to introduce in the methods of etymology on the basis of Indo-European languages. Students should be able to apply the basic methods used in etymology.
Syllabus
  • 1. Sound correspondences: anlaut, inlaut, auslaut. 2. Morphological segmentation of the word: root, stem, derivational suffixes, prefixes, nominal & verbal inflection, compounding. 3. Rules explaining the exceptions: Lex Verner, Grassmann, Bartholomae, Brugmann, etc. 4. Innovations vs. archaisms: Leskien’s rule (example of the Slavic l-epentheticum). 5. Etymological illustratons from various semantic fields; the method Wörter und Sachen: 5.1. Body parts. 5.2. Kinship terms. 5.3. Natural phenomena: living & unliving nature. 5.4. Cultural words.

Teaching methods
The teacher demonstrates the basic etymological approaches, connecting the analyzed words with objects or phenomena designated by these words. After it students try to apply these methods in their own etymological research.

Own etymological solution of various words representing different semantic fields.
