- Course objectives
- The one-semester long course (2 seminars) consists of the statistical interpretation, i.e. reading, transcribing and statistical analysis of a census of the population of the town Bruntál from the beginning of 1691 (Specification aller lebendigen Seelen bei der stadt Freudenthal Anno 1691). This main goal of the seminar is worked out alongside the periodization of Czech history according to Ottokar Lorenz’s book Generationslehre und der Geschichtsunterricht. The analysis of the above source is supplemented by the definition of the term “vertical structure” while Lorenz’s work serves as a basis for understanding the generation-based structuring of length of historical distances which results in defining distance in history as a geometrical line. Throughout the semester attention is also paid to the reading and transcribing of Czech texts written in Old German script (Kurrent).
