Course objectives
The lecture focuses on crucial topics and trends of literaty theoretical investigation of the 20th Century, analysing their particular attitudes and evaluating their contribution for the purpose of interpretation. Among others positivism, formalism, Prague School structuralism, Constance School, veroslogy and narratology are dicussed. All the topics are presented to the students in wider cultural and historical relationships.
After finishing the course the students will be able:
to understand the crucial literary theoretical conceptions of the 20th century;
the ability to critically analyse and compare particular literary theoretical conceptions and their connections;
to apply these conceptions to analyses of artistic texts;
to put the literary theoretical development within a wider, historical and cultural realms.

  • Foundations of Russian Formalism; Theory of chronotope and polyglossia: Bakhtin; Archetypal Criticism: Frye, Jung; Theory of genre I - fairy tale (Propp, Černoušek); Prague Linguistic Circle: history, the importance in the history of literary science, the method of structuralism; Main figures of the Prague Linguistic Circle: Jakobson, Mukařovský; Theory of genre II: value - high and low literatures (Eco), comic books; Phenomenological impulses: Ingarden, Heidegger, Patočka, Iser; Hermeneutical impulses: Gadamer, reception aesthetics, Ricoeur.

Teaching methods
Lecture is based on methods of presentation, analysis and synthesis of knowledge.
Assessment methods
The course ends with an exam which consists of an written and oral parts. In order to be examined the students must have passed the Theory of literature seminars I. and II. During the exam the students have to prove the knowledge of main concepts and issues of literary theoretical conceptions of the 20th century. The students are obliged to present their knowledge of seven literary theoretical studies and three monographies (chosen from the list).

Information on completion of the course: Přednáška je vázána na dvousemestrový seminář Teorie literatury I a II. Předmět si zapíší všichni studující bohemistiky; zkouška je povinná, účast na přednášce je nepovinná. Zapsaní posluchači z oboru Sdružená uměnovědná studia ukončí předmět kolokviem.
General note: Z kapacitních důvodů je letos přednáška otevřena pouze studujícím češtiny a Sdružených uměnovědných studií.
