- Course objectives
- Lecture and seminar are devoted to German literature 1790-1820, i.e. to Weimar classicism and romanticism. Attention is concentrated on most important tendencies, groups and authors and on analysis of representative works. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to understand and translate some more difficukt texts of this period (e. g. Hölderlin, Jean Paul, Novalis) into Czexch, to comment, analyse and interpret the most important works (especially poetry and prose) of the 19th century in context of contemporary philosophy including historical backgound.. The Students should present o longer paper (10 000 signs) on a given subject.

- Weimar classicism, most important works of Goethe and Schiller.
- Goethes Faust in context. Drama and theatre in the years about 1800. Heinrich von Kleist, Friedrich Hölderlin, Jean Paul. Romanticism. Early romanticists (Jena), especially Novalis and Tieck. High romanticism (Heidelberg), especially „Des Knaben Wunderhorn“. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and the beginnings of German studies. Late romanticism (Berlin), especially E.T.A.Hoffmann. Bürger-Künstler-Problematik. Most important genres, especially fairy- tales.
