- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to understand the periodisation of the older history of Vietnam. Students will have basic informations about the main eras of the history of Vietnam until the 19th century in the context of the political and cultural development of the South East Asia and the relations between Vietnam and China.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction, periodisation of the older history of Vietnam. Prehistory. Theories of the origin of the contemporary ethnic groups. Đông Sơn culture, Au Lac kingdom. 2.-3. Indianisation of the Mainland Southeast Asia. Origin of Champa, Funan and their older history in the context of other Hinduistic kingdoms in the South East Asia. 4. Han conquest of the northern Vietnam. Nanyue. First rebellions against China. The Northern Vietnam under the Chinese rule. Important Sino-Vietnamese clans. 5. Development of the Vietnamese culture under Han and Tang dynasties. Buddhism in the Northern Vietnam. 6. Independence of the Northern Vietnam. Dynasty Ly. Fights with Chams. 7. Mongolian incursions (Northern Vietnam, Champa, South East Asia) 8. Dynasty Tran. Hồ Quý Ly. Influence of Confusianism on the Vietnamese culture. 9. Recent history of Champa 10. Ming China's dominance. Arrival of Europeans. 11. Tay Son insurection and Nguyen dynasty till the French colonization of Indochina
