Course objectives
The goal is to introduce the students to the modern theories of syllable structure. Students should be able to apply their methods to Czech data.
Syllabus
  • 1. Why do we need syllables? (Syllables and prosody; Syllables and segmental phonology; Syllables and morphology) 2. Representation of syllable structure (Syllable structure and suprasegmental phonology; Structure of a syllable; Onset-Rhyme Theory) 3. Syllabification and sonority 4. Representational vs. derivational approaches to syllable structure 5. Representational theory of syllable: CVCV 6. Syllabic consonants in Czech
