Course objectives
The lecture will deal with the following subjects: Periodization and debate: when is the beginning of the Czech literature of 20th century? Is the landmark the 90s‘ or World War? Segmentation, plurality of the 90s‘, projection of the other possibilities in development. Between revival and modernism. Artistic movements at the beginning of the century. Czech expresionism, cubism in fine arts and literature, philosophical and literary pragmatism. "The lost generation". Authors outside the "paradigm", "anomalies" and their place in development. Literature in the 20s’ and the 30‘ : avant-garde, ploretarian and spirutual poetry, differentiation of prose. Critical valuation of present situation in the Group 42 and group Ra.
Syllabus
  • Pre-war modernism in comparison with modernism of the 1890's. The situation when the new generation is appearing, relations between generations. Is new century beginning with the outburst of WWI? Artistic movements at the beginning of the century. General and individual problems, typical representatives of the generation. The aim of the course is to aquire the problems connected with the development of the Czech literature from fin de siècle till the end of the World War II.
