- Course objectives
- The excursion will be focused on the culture and on the arts of North-Western Bohemia from the middle of the 14th to the middle of the 16th century. At that time, the region of the Ore Mountains was one of the most important parts of the Bohemian Kingdom. On the one hand, it was for its geographical situation, in the neighborhood of the powerful Electorate of Saxony and for the presence of numerous local noblemen with the background of a career from the court of Prague. On the other hand, the importance of the region resided in its economic value – documented by some important commercial centers, royal cities – due to the rich sources of metals. This prominent position was then projected on the cultural development of the region, testified by the collection of the preserved artworks, quantitatively but also qualitatively above the average.
- Syllabus
- The principal destinations of this excursion are the royal city of Most and the decanal church of Assumption of the Virgin, the city of Chomutov with its exceptional collections preserved in the local museum, the royal city of Kadaň with its monastery of Fourteen Holy Acolytes (one of the most important ecclesiastical institutions in the region), and finally the city of Jáchymov with its monuments from the period of the "silver fever" at the beginning of the 16th century.
