Course objectives
The objective of the course is gaining overview of traditionalist tendencies in architecture from the end of the 19th century to the present, and in the professional and lay debate as well. Key themes of new traditionalism in architecture are discussed in the lectures: Beaux-Arts architecture and the theory of style, reformist urban planning from Camillo Sitte to New Urbanism, the Heimatschutz Movement and controversies between traditionalists and modernists in the heritage preservation, influential architects and theorists, and problems of interpretation of the architecture of the 20th and 21st century. The objective of the seminar is an analysis of important programmes and critical texts by architects, preservationists, theorists and historians of art engaged in the debates on contemporary architecture.
