Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the topic of medieval theatre and drama and contextualize it to the historical and cultural background. Performance and production practices and the process of writing medieval drama in Europe and the Czech lands in particular will be demonstrated in lectures, discussions and class reading of both primary and secondary sources.

  • 1. Performance and performativity in the Middle Ages
  • 2. Medieval liturgy
  • 3. Religious theatre and drama: Easter and Christmas plays,Old and New Testament plays, Saint plays; mysteries, miracle plays, cycle plays, passiones, planctus
  • 4. Profane theatre and drama: farce, sotie, troubadours/ minnesäng, jesters
  • 5. Cultural, political and social performances: royal entry, corronation, pilgrimage/parade, teaching, etc.
