Course objectives
The main objective of this course is that students become fluent enough so as to speak Catalan at a level of A2 in the CEFR. This means that by the end of the course students should be proficient enough to understand and produce expressions relationg their daily life (family, shopping, work, etc.). This includes linguistic competences (phonetics, lexis, grammar, etc.), sociolinguistic competence, and als pragmàtic competence. Different textual typologies will be presented, and students will learn how to differenciate registers and dialects. At the same time, basic informations regarding Catalonia, its society and its language will be provided in class, since this subject aims to work as an introduction to a wider program in Catalan language and literature.

  • 1. Family and identity: introductions and colloquial dialogs. 2. House, home and town: physical descriptions. 3. Jobs, timetable: talking about habits and routines. 4. Food, clothes and fashion: shopping. 5. Hobbies and sports: give some news. 6. Human body, health and illnesses: recommendations. 7. Weather, nature and travelling: planning our future. 8. Literature and culture: interviews.

Teaching methods
Lessons will be very practical, so attendance is recommended.
Assessment methods
1st call: Assessment will take place in a continuous form, through class exercises and practical assignments. - 30%: class exercises. -70%: assignments. 3 assignments will be proposed: a narrative about a celebrity (20%); an oral 'editorial' (25%); an interview to a writer of famous character of the Catalan literature (25%). 2nd call: Exam (100%)
