Basic course of Ancient History (not an unconditional requirement). At least basic orientation in the history of the Roman Empire.

Course objectives
Upon succsesful completion of this course, student will be able to discuss the historical changes in the development of later Roman Empire;
to evaluate the costructive role of the great migration period in the history;
he will be able to evaluate the written sources to the life of Germans and Huns;
he will be able to discuss the importance of these tribes for the history of early medieval Europe
Syllabus
  • 1. The migrations of peoples as one of the most important proceedings of the world history. Tacitus about the life of Germans.
  • 2. The Situation of the Roman Enmpire in the period of great migration.
  • 3. The beginnings of the migrations of Germanic peoples.
  • 4.The first conflicts between the Romans and Germans (to the age of so called Marcomanian wars). The Marcomanian wars.
  • 5. The changes in the barbarian world during the 3th century A.D.
  • 6. The history of the Huns (Hsiung-nu) in Asia.
  • 7. The comming of Huns to the territory of Europe and its consequences.
  • 8. The empire of Attila; The Huns and the Roman Empire; the Huns and the subjected Germanic tribes.
  • 9. The Wisigoths and the Empire; the first Christians of the Germanic world. Vulfilas Bible.
  • 10. The Ostrogothic state in Italy and the traditions of antiquity in it.
  • 11. The Vandals, Suebes and Alans. The state of Vandals in Roman Africa and the persecution of catholic inhabitants of this land.
  • 12.The Burgunds and their relations to the Romans inhabitants in Rhona valley. 13) The comparison of the nominated states.

Assessment methods
Written test or oral examination (accordig to the number of students in course) aimed at testing student's insight into topics explained during lectures.
5 questions (the Late Roman Empire, the sources to the study of so called Barbarians, the history of the "barbarian states" on the Roman teritory or of the empire of Huns, the religious questions of the time of barbarian invasions, the explaining of some term (hospitalitas, personality of law and so on).
