Course objectives
The course offers a complex and a relatively thorough survey on the development of the Reformist tendencies of the thought within the Islamic societies of the 18th-20th centuries. The presentation will be put into the broader historical and political framework of that era. The main attention will be paid to the analysis of the reasons of so-called „dark centuries“ period (era of stagnation, 16th-19th centuries), reaction on impulses of the following clash with the European colonialism, analysis of particular forms of Islamic reformist teachings, the recent differentiation of the Islamic thought on that of traditional, mystical, secularist-like, fundamentalist stream, including the Shiite one. The main stress will be consequently paid on the current trends, including that of the impact on both the local nad international politics. Islam will be traced as the specific and indigenous ideological and juridical concept of the present, not spoken about its exclusively religious dimension.

  • (1)Reasons of the „decline“ of the Islamic civilization and forms of its „backwardness“ (2) European Colonialism and its impulses for the reform of Islam (3) Ideological sources of the Islamic Reformism; its periodization and regional specific features (4) Relationship between religion and politics in Islam. (5) Relationship between secularist and religious aspects of the power in the modern history of Islam; normative versus „lived“ Islam. (6) Reform of Islam as seen by Sunni and Shiite schools of law (7) Radical forms of the Islamic Reformism (the Wahhabi movement as an indigenous Reformation) (8) Anticolonial Reformation movements (sanusiyya, Mahdist movement, jihads in the Saharian region and India) (9) Intellectual Reformism of the 19th and 20th centuries in Egypt, Tunisia and Levant (10) Struggle for a secular type of state in the 1th half of the 20th century. (11) the Turkish laicism versus Arab and Indian Panislamism (12) The Islamic fundamentalism and historical/cultural preconditions of „the Arab Spring“ (13) Contemporary Islamic trends and amd the Western model of the „civic society"
