Knowledge of basic grammar and lexicon of classical Latin as taught in courses Latin for Students of Romance Languages I, II (ROMIB001 and ROMIB004).

Course objectives
Vulgar Latin:
The aim of the course is to provide insight into the development of Latin during first centuries of our era, and to point to tendencies related to the development of Romance languages. The point of comparison is Classical Latin acquired by students during their previous studies.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
  • sketch development of Latin in the fields of phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicon with emphasis on Vulgar and Late Latin;
  • show relation between selected Late Latin evolutionary tendencies and the development of the Romance languages (mainly Italian, Spanish and French);
  • explain some basic principles related to the development of language and language changes.

    • Vulgar Latin:
    • Introduction.
    • Concepts of Vulgar and Late Latin and their definition.
    • Romanization and the Romance languages.
    • Changes in the vocalic and consonantic systems.
    • Theory of grammaticalization.
    • Nominal system. Changes in declination. Graduation of adjectives. Changes in pronouns, origin of the definite article.
    • Verbal system. Development of new forms (future, perfect), passive voice.
    • Syntax: accusative with infinitive, quod clauses, absolute constructions, indirect questions.
    • Lexicon: semantic changes, Greek loan-words.

    Lectures and work with selected samples of Late Latin texts.
    Assessment methods
    Examination
    Written test from both Classical and Vulgar Latin. In the Classical Latin part, the knowledge of basic Latin morphology, selected syntactic phenomena and basic vocabulary will be required (requirements are based on the grammar and vocabulary studied in courses of Latin for Students of Romance Languages: https://is.muni.cz/auth/predmet/phil/podzim2015/ROMIB001 ; https://is.muni.cz/auth/predmet/phil/jaro2016/ROMIB004). In the Vulgar Latin part, questions will focus on topics studied during the course. Students will explain simple examples of evolutionary tendencies found in texts.
