- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide the students with the elementary theoretical knowledge relating to phonetics and phonology and to teach them to apply the information on the present-day Czech material. Students are also supposed to learn phonetic and phonological analysis (transcription) of a Standard Czech text as well as the classification of Czech sounds.
- Learning outcomes (in Czech)
- Student bude po absolvování předmětu schopen: - identifikovat a popsat základní rysy fonetiky a fonologie češtiny; - přepsat spisovný český text text pomocí fonologické transkripce; - přepsat spisovný český text pomocí fonetické transkripce; - klasifikovat české hlásky.
- Syllabus
- The course offers a basic introduction to the sound structure of the language with regard to the basic components of synchronic description and on this basis provides a survey of elementary data relating to present-day Czech. Topics dealt with include: spoken and written language (including rules of Czech orthography, applied to specific texts); the sound structure of language and it graphic form (transcription, transliteration); articulation phonetics; acoustic and auditive phonetics; types of sounds; classification of Czech sounds; articulation of speech, prosody; sound changes in continuous speech; Czech orthoepic rules; phonology, phoneme, alophone; elementary phonological description of Czech; development of the discipline. Students must also be able to carry out phonetic and phonological analysis (transcription) of a Standard Czech text plus to prove their knowledge of the classification of Czech vowels.

- Teaching methods
- The course has the form of lectures accompanied by practical examples of phonetic as well as phonological transcriptions and of classification of Czech sounds.
- Assessment methods
- The course is completed with a written exam. The exam is focused on practical knowledge of phonetic and phonological transcriptions, on classification of Czech sounds and on basic theoretical knowledge from this particular field. N.B.: To take the written exam, students must successfully complete the dictation testing their practical knowledge of present-day codification of orthography.
