Course objectives
Main aims of the course are detailed information about: 1) the Czech Language Atlas and its significance for knowledge about the development of the Czech language
2) areal linguistics: development and methods;
3) specific features of the Czech dialectological school and its contributions to areal linguistics;
4) how to use specific maps of the Czech Language Atlas;
5) how to use the knowledge acquired when working with a language material.
Learning outcomes (in Czech)
Student bude po absolvování předmětu schopen: - shrnout a popsat problematiku areálové lingvistiky, její vývoj a metody; - shrnout a popsat specifika české dialektologické školy a a její přínos pro areálovou lingvistiku; - získané poznatky aplikovat při práci s konkrétními mapami Českého jazykového atlasu; - na základě získaných poznatků samostatně pracovat s jazykovým materiálem.

  • 1., 2. Areal linguistics: development and methods
  • 3. Czech Language Atlas in the context of other language atlasaes – Slavonic and non-Slavonic
  • 4. Lexical, morphological and phonological dialectal features in an areal view
  • 5. Reflection of contacts with neighbouring languages in Czech dialects
  • 6. The significance of Czech Language Atlas for information about present-day language, especially its spoken varieties
  • 7. A part of the course is a visit to the specialized dialectological research centre.

Teaching methods
Teacher’s explanations, discussion on problem areas, exercises (also based on homework). An excursion to an institution focused on dialectology.
Assessment methods
The course ends by awarding credits. To receive the credits, it is necessary to participate actively in the seminar (discussion), to attend the course regularly (at most three absences), to present a seminar work dealing with a particular problem from the sphere of dialectology.
