Course objectives
The aim of the two-semester course is to train the students to achieve the level of biblical Hebrew. The course is focused on work with terms and the ability of their correct reading and transcription. During the first semester the students will learn the Hebrew script, system of writing vowels and consonants and other rules of reading. The students work with a vocalized text, further basic principles of morphology and syntax will be studied.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able
- to read vocalized Hebrew terms and senteces ;
- to search in a dictionnary for non-vocalized terms and transcribe them;
- to use basic vocabulary;
- to distinguish Masoretic corrections of the text;
- to use basic grammatical rules;
- to identify the verbal root and derive meanings of other words from it.
Syllabus
  • Biblical Hebrew in the context of other Semitic languages, preserved texts.
  • Hebrew alphabet, system of vocalization, system of Masoretic corrections of the text (k´tiv and k´re), tetragram.
  • Furhter signs and rules of reading of text (dagesh, sh´va, mapik, makef...).
  • Sylablle and accent.
  • Particles.
  • Inseparable preposition and the conjunction "and" and their vocalization.
  • Genus and number.
  • Personal pronoun, demonstrative.
  • Genitive case.

Teaching methods
Theoretical explanation of grammatical rules, readings, translation, homeworks.
Assessment methods
Written final test (max. is 72 point, fo successful completing of the course min. 43 point are necessary). The test represents 100% of overall assesment. The students are required to do homeworks during the semester - readings and translations.
