Course objectives
After finishing the course students:
- understand the development of editing rules from the 19th century till today;
- are able to find and assign a source text for a critical edition;
- acquire basic procedures of editorial work;
- are familiar with editing marks;
- are able to prepare a short text for publishing, including an editorial note.
Edition rules and the procedure of preparing a text for a critical edition. The preparation of a text from the starting phase (sources looked for, collected and compared, attribution of a text, determining the text which will be used for the edition) to the final phase (the final form of the text for print, including critical commentary).
Syllabus
  • (1) Reference literature and its evaluation. Proof-reading marks. (2-4) Concrete explanation of edition rules and textual modifications in 19th and 20th century texts. (5-6) Test textological preparation of short texts (three to four pages), their control and evaluation. Each participant in the seminar will prepare an independently chosen text and will provide it with a short editorial note. (7-14) Collective work with a text - collective preparation of a critical edition of one or two fairy-tales by Božena Němcová (eventually a different text after consultation in the seminar).

Teaching methods
The seminar is based on methods of presentation, application, collective and individual work of students.
Assessment methods
The students will be given the credit for editing a shorter text and providing it with an editors note.
