- Prerequisites
- Having read the historical books of the Old Testament, especially the Books of Samuel.
Writing a short paper (2 pages) on the characteristics of king David on the basis of the Books of Samuel before the start of the course. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- Course objectives
- To show new approaches to the ancient history of Israel, to present historical processes that formed the entire development as well as particular events of this history.
- Learning outcomes
- After the completion of the course, students will be:
- well versed in the history of ancient Israel
- able to approach the text sources without bias and interpret them on the basis of the analyzes carried out in the seminars. - Syllabus
- The course will present historical processes that led from a segmented and tribal society to the creation of first Israelite states in the Canaan region.
- It will guide the students through the stories of Saul, David and Solomon and the birth of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.
- It will show the relations between both kingdoms and their position in a wider Near Eastern context.
- The starting-source is the Hebrew Bible, that is our Old Testament, that has to be read with caution, and one should have in mind, in which period of time individual books originated and from which individual parts and source streams these books consist of.
- In the seminar part, selected parts of the Books of Samuel will be analyzed. The students will be acquainted with the methods of how to approach given text and which criteria to use in its interpretation.

- Assessment methods
- For the completion of the course, active participation is required as well as a seminar work that has to be presented during the final seminar. The work in its definitive form can be handed in at the end of the semester.
Topics: Historical books of the Old Testament - Josue, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, Esdras, Nehemiah, 1 and 2 Chronicles.
Students choose one of these books, present its content and how its value from the biblical and historical point of view is perceived today. - Language of instruction
