Course objectives
The course is dealing with two playwrights whose work has significantly influenced the form of drama in the 20th century. It tries to place both authors into the wider context of European drama and also takes interest in work of some colleagues of both masters. Analyses of 7 plays and observing their staging practice from the time of their origin till today is part of hte course too. Independent work of students in the Elf environment is required.

The course is held in Czech.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will be able to:
- explain historical and social context of Scandinavia at the 2nd half of 19th century and beginnig of 20th century;
- understand works by H. Ibsen and A. Strindberg;
- describe staging practise of chosen performances by Ibsen and Strindberg;
- analyse drama and understand its structure.

  • 1. organisation, introduction, time and context, chronology of European theatre
  • 2. Norwegian drama before Ibsen, Ibsen's counterparts, Ibsen's life, association with theatre, Ibsen's work - characteristics, phases, staging practice in Norway
  • 3. Peer Gynt (1867) – play, verse (in Ibsen's and Strindberg's playwrighting), staging practice, reflection
  • 4. Doll's house (1879) – play, staging practice, reflection
  • 5. Nora goes abroad – metamorphosis of the theme
  • 6. Swedish theatre before Strindberg, Strindberg's counterparts, Strindberg.s life, association with theatre, Strindberg's work - characteristics, phases, staging practice in Sweden
  • 7. Miss Julie (1888) – preface to the play, play, staging practice, reflection
  • 8. The Lady from the Sea (1888) – play, staging practice, reflection
  • 9. Erik XIV (1899) – historical plays (comparison with Ibsen)
