Course objectives
Practical course focused on creative and systematic work with the subject of a feature or documentary film, the development of screenwriting skills and the dramaturgical reflection of texts.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will have been able to:
Understand theoretically and practically the problems of screenwriting and dramaturgy of both feature and documentary film.
Develop a theme and a script.
Analyze dramaturgically the literary script.
Syllabus
  • Part I (lessons no. 1-6)
  • First six lessons (first half of the semester) will be concerned with a theoretical grounding in specific technics and possibilities of the theme and the script development.
  • Classes will be focused on subject of author in a process of writing within dramaturgical work on the text and so-called friction/non-friction attitude to the theme, explaining important moments in the creative process across all genres.
  • Theoretical introduction will be accompanied by Czech directors and screenwriters with different approach to the theme (the guests will be specified in September). Students will study screenplays to their films which will be the basic material for identifying specific screenwriting/directorial approaches and for debating the creative process.
  • Students will be divided in two working groups according to their key interest - fiicton or non-fiction film.
  • Each student develops their own project - a theme.
  • Part II (lessons 7-12): screenplay development, project presentation and dramaturgical reports.
  • Each student develops their own project from a theme to a script. The result should, with its content, scope and quality, match the qualities of literary script.
  • Pro každý projekt bude ustaven příslušný dramaturg, tzn. že každý autor má svého dramaturga a každý dramaturg svého autora, resp. že každý je sobě autorem a jinému dramaturgem.
  • Beside the script, each student makes a dramaturgical reflection of the work of one of his colleagues from the second working group. It means that each author has their own script editor.
