Course objectives
The subject is intended to all Faculty of Arts students with an interest in the culture of South and Sout-East Asia, with a special focus on Ramayana. The goal of the course is to present a variety of different national versions of Ramayana, especially then the introductions to a Cambodian version, Reamker, a its representation in statuary, paintwork, dance, film etc. The course will present the history, development, versions, and will approach the general plot, explain the national specificity and Khmer terminology. Under the lecturer´s guidance the students will get acquainted with a variety of media samples of procesing of Reamker topic, in the film, paintwork, dance, shadow theatre and music, and with chosen segments of Reamker (specific parts translated into Czech language).
Learning outcomes
After the successful finalization of the course will be sthe students close familiar with the problems of Ramayanam, the will be able to discuss this tipis, recognize the single local versions of this text and his extra-literary elaboration. They will also obtain the skills to orient themselves in an illustrations of the individual characters, identify them and not so only in the text-frame, ale also in the dance, visual arts, architecture or shadow theatre.
Syllabus
  • 1 Introductory lesson; informative meeting; granting inquiry of course process and terms of course finalization.
  • 2. Ramayana and its spread in Asia, different national versions. An brief introduction. Samples. Examples from different areas: literature, dance, architecture, statuary, film.
  • 3. Reamker. History-development-versions. Brief introduction into the text. Explanation of elementary Khmer terms. Other forms, next to the literary: dancing, music, architecture, statuary, wall paintings, film. Audiovisual illustrations.
  • 4. General plot. Main characters - description, explanation.
  • 5. Reameker reading (of Czech translation, Samdech Thiounn version)
  • 6. Sbek Thom: traditional Khmer shadow theatre and Reamker.
  • 7. Robam Reamker: Visual display in a dancing.
  • 8. Reamker in fine arts: Reamker and the murals of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.
  • 9. Reamker in film. Audiovisual illustrations.
  • 10. Reamker in architecture.
  • 11. Student assignments presentation. Oral defence of an essey.
  • 12. Student assignments presentation. Closing discussion.
Teaching methods
Tuition is processed in the form of lectures, combined with audiovisual presentations and discussion with students about chosen specific topics. From students is required an independent work with audiovisual materials and with the text.

Coursework reading of submitted source.
