- Course objectives
- The aim of the subject is to make the doctoral students acquainted with the major representatives of linguistic thinking who made a lasting contribution to the development of contemporary linguistic research in distinctive fields of linguistics. Starting from modern linguistic approaches, the students will trace the history of linguistic research into the essential components of language study at the time when linguistics was being constituted as an independent science. The course will outline the split development resulting in two parallel streams in mainstream linguistics: European vs. American linguistics.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will get acquainted with the major representatives of linguistic thinking who made a lasting contribution to the development of contemporary linguistic research in distinctive fields of linguistics. The students will be able to trace the history of linguistic research into the essential components of language study at the time when linguistics was being constituted as an independent science. They will become familiar with the split development resulting in two parallel streams in mainstream linguistics: European vs. American linguistics. They will be able to compare the linguistic approaches presented in the subject.
