Prerequisites
The course is intended for students of master degree studies. Basic knowledge on history of European baroque painting in 17th and 18th century is presupposed.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The course introduces selected chapters from the history of the baroque wall painting in the Central Europe and inspects the position of the Catholic Church and church orders in the process of development of its stylistic forms and iconography.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
- characterise the role of the Church and orders in the history of the baroque wall painting
- specify the way the orders implemented their influence on the iconography and visuality of paintings
- describe the main resolutions issued by the Council of Trent and significant ideas of selected theological tractates in their relation to the early modern art
- describe and explain the main iconographic topics of the baroque wall paintings in the church milieu.
Syllabus
  • The influence of orders on shaping of wall painting forms in the Baroque (Jesuits, Benedictines)
  • "Bildertheologie", images from the classical mythology, images of nudity, censorship.
  • Glorification/apotheosis in the church milieu as the most important iconographic theme of the early modern art.
  • The Jesuits order - orders and their influence on the formation of baroque wall painting.
  • Illusionism in the baroque wall painting; the relationship between wall paintings and sacral architecture.
