- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to: explain the development of fundamental basic theoretical directions of ethnology; interpret the results of the history of ethnology research in social and cultural connections; combine the methodological steps in ethnology and cultural anthropology; evaluate the development of ethnology in comparison with other disciplines.

- Inntroduction to the history of ethnology.
- Beginning of interest in the “strange” and “different” in antiquity.
- Islam and Europe, conflicts of various cultures.
- Discovery of America and “end of certainty” in Europe.
- Consequences of modern explorations (new knowledge as well as different views on own culture).
- The Enlightenment, pre-Romantism in Europe.
- Romantism as the background for defining “Folk” and its culture
- Evolutionist theory in anthropology and ethnology.
- Diffusionism.
- Psychological and sociological schools.
- Functionalism.
- Structuralism.
