Course objectives
The course presents history of Czech nonfiction and documentary cinema. At the end of the course students should be able to understand key genres of nonfiction and documentary film; distinguish its functions in different historical periods; explain work of important film-makers.
Learning outcomes
After finishing this course, students will:
gain basic knowledge of Czech documentary cinema history before the half of 1950s;
understand the significance of pre-war and post-war local cinema in broader social context;
understand Czech documentary cinema as a complex social phenomenon, not only as a sequence of aesthetically exceptional films;
understand relationship between production, distribution and film introduction;
broaden their existing knwoledge with less-featured films.

  • Theories of nonfiction and documentary film.
  • Genres, modes and their function.
  • Documentary in silent era.
  • 1930s and Czech sound documentary.
  • Establishment of Krátký film, after-war period.
  • Documentarists of the 1960s.
  • Documentary and normalisation.
  • Privatisation of Krátký film and documentary after 1989.
