Course objectives
Lectures introduces students to Slavonic studies as a specialized field of study, and to historical comparative method in linguistics and its application on study of Slavonic languages. This course presents students with phonetic and phonological system of Proto-Slavic language, and follows current state of Easter, Western and Southern Slavonic languages. Students will be presented with Old Church Slavonic texts written in Cyrillic script and exercise phonetic changes that took place in development from Proto-Slavic to nowadays languages during the seminars.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to orientate themselves in the early phases of Slavonic languages development and in basic characteristics of Proto-Slavonic and Old Church Slavonic, taking their phonetic and grammar structure into consideration.

  • 1. Slavonic studies as a specialized field, important scholars. 2. Urheimat of Slavs. Indo-European and Nostratic origin of Slavonic languages, historical comparative method in linguistics. 3. Balto-Slavonic language unity. 4. Proto-Slavonic era of Slavonic languages. Phonetic and phonological system of Proto-Slavonic language. 5. Old Church Slavonic - first written Slavonic language. 6. Eastern Slavonic languages - current stage. 7. Western Slavonic languages - current state. 8. Southern Slavonic languages - current state.

Teaching methods
Lecture, seminar, discussion.
Assessment methods
Oral exam will examine knowledge of the discussed topics. Students will need to prove their ability to read a text in Old Church Slavonic written in Cyrillic script, detect the Slavonic language by its graphic form and localize this language on a map. Students must also answer one theoretical question.
