- Course objectives
- Comparative picture of the most important moments in the development of Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Macedonian, Bosnian and Montenegrin language. This course is introducing development process of today’s South Slavonic languages as a story with several meeting points (f. e. Church Slavonic tradition in Bulgaria and Serbia), as well as very interesting specifics (Glagolitic script in Croatia, construction of common literary language in Serbia and Croatia in 19th century, centrifugal tendencies of Macedonian Bulgarians (today’s Macedonians) and lately Bosniaks and Montenegrins.
- Learning outcomes
- The aim of this course is to present the process of forming of contemporary standard languages and meeting points in their development.
- Syllabus
- 1. Bulgarian language since Saints Cyril and Methodius beginnings till the end of 15th century, Preslav and Ohrid school, Turnovo school.
- 2. Bulgarian language since the 16th till 19th century, Damaskins, New Bulgarian, Slavonic-Bulgarian and Church Slavonic school.
- 3. Bulgarian language from the half of 19th century, contemporary Bulgarian language.
- 4. Constitution of Macedonian standard language.
- 5. Development of Slovenian standard language.
- 6. Serbian language in the Middle Ages, Zeta-Hum, Rascian and Resavian school, Serbian Church Slavonic language, Russian Church Slavonic language, Slavonic-Serbian language.
- 7. Serbian language in the 19th century, reforms of Vuk Karadžić.
- 8. Serbian language in the 20th century; Serbo-Croatian period; events after 1991.
- 9. Croatian language in the Middle Ages, Glagolitian written tradition, literature of Dubrovnik, development till the end of 18th century.
- 10. Croatian language in the 19th century, Illyrian movement, Vienna literary agreement 1850, development in the second half of 19th century.
- 11. Croatian language in the 20th century; Serbo-Croatian period, the language of the Independent State of Croatia; Novi Sad agreement 1954; events after 1991.
