- Course objectives
- Upon successful completion of the course, students will have a general knowledge about the ancient classical literary culture and its continuation in the Middle Ages, or the modern era; they will be able to describe this process with the examples of particular literary works pertaining to both European and Bohemian Middle Ages.
- Syllabus
- 1. The Latin patristics: dubitations of the Church Fathers about the reception of the pagan classical civilisation, in contrast to their inevitable dependence on it.
- 2. Merovingian and Carolingian period.
- 3. The so-called humanism of the 12th century.
- 4. Late Middle Ages (Aetas Horatiana, Vergiliana, Ovidiana).
- 5. Development of literary and cultural tradition based on the ancient motives and works of art, continually recalled by medieval authors.

- Credit is given upon successful completion of the following three tasks:
1. Active participation in the class discussions.
2. Three written assignements, in one case together with oral presentation (resume of a scholarly article; resume of one medieval text read in translation; final essay on medieval literature, min. 6000 characters)
3. Final written test examining student’s insight into the topics explained during the lectures.
