Course objectives
The main aim of the course is to introduce natural environment, landscape, society, economy and culture in Mediterranean region and surroundings. The course is fundamental input into the problem, introduces Medterranean in whole (geographical region) and discusses its uniting points and simultaneously its inner differentiation.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
- describe natural environment, landscape, society, economy and culture in Mediterranean region;
- identify inner differentiation and uniting points in the Mediterranean region;
- to interpret different points of view of the region;
- to evaluate problems and current regional issues.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction: organisation of course. Mediterranean as natural, historical, cultural, political region? Delimitation of area. Subregions (inner differentiation) of Mediterranean.
  • 2. Natural conditions: types of climate: hydrology of Mediterranean.
  • 3. Natural conditions: relief; tectonics and orogenesis; natural hazards; inland hydrology.
  • 4. Landscape: biogeographical region, historical development of landscape.
  • 5. Population: size and distribution of population; demographic indicators and demographic change compared to other world macro-regions; internal differentiation of demographic development in the Mediterranean. Migration.
  • 6. Population: ethnic and religious structure.
  • 7. Settlement and urbanisation: types of settlement, degree of urbanisation, main agglomerations.
  • 8. Economy: economic development (GDP and human development index) with comparison with another macroregions, inner differentiation of Mediterranean; occurence of poverty; structure of economy.
  • 9. Economy: mineral materials; agricultural regions and main industrial centres.
  • 10. Tourism: the impact of tourism on economy, specialization of tourism, main destinations.
  • 11. Development of political organization: nation-building and state-formation in the modern era. Contemporary political systems.
  • 12. Discussion of selected political conflicts: Catalonia, Palestine, Syria, Western Sahara.
  • 13. Political and economical integration in the Mediterranean. Relations with the EU. Mediterranean Union.

Teaching methods
A combination of lectures, seminars, readings and a group presentations (a seminar project). Seminars typically have a nature of either class discussion or a presentation of a seminar project (in group).
