- Why, what for, how, and what with it today?
The course will answer the questions why did Plato introduce the Forms, what for should this explaining tool serve, how was it elaborate and what was/is its later influence. - Learning outcomes
- After the completion of the course, students should be able to:
- explain grounds of Plato's introduction of Forms;
- explain significance of this step for the system of Plato's thought;
- list objections to the concept of Forms;
- describe significance of this conception for history of thinking. - Syllabus
- 1. Plato's words about the Forms.
- 2. The structure of the realm of Forms.
- 3. The relationship of Forms and particulars (the third man problem).
- 4. How are we to recognize Forms?
- 5. Aristotle's critique of Plato's Forms (Metaphysics).
- 6. The heritage of Plato's conception of Forms.
