Course objectives
The course follows the Methodology I. In this semester, the aim is to understand the bases and principles of qualitative approach in methodology and to gain authentic experience with this type of research (conducting, transcription and analysis of the interview according to selected qualitative approach).
Learning outcomes
Student / student will be able to / and after the course: - Understand the roots and starting points of the qualitative approach in the methodology;
- to identify and summarize important features of the main approaches in a qualitative approach to methodology,
- Identify situations where a qualitative approach to methodology is appropriate and decide which;
- to distinguish and assess the specifics of different types of observations and interviews, depending on the initial methodological approach and their suitability for certain types of research questions; - to name and consider the limits and risks of the qualitative approach, respectively. methods for solving various kinds of research questions;
- to plan, implement, record and transcribe the interview according to the selected qualitative approach;
- Apply the procedures and techniques of the selected qualitative approach in the methodology for the given research problem
Syllabus
  • Lectures (á 2 hours): 1. Historical roots, development and current form of qualitative approach in psychology (with special focus on hermeneutics and phenomenology).
  • 2-6. Streams in current Qualitative approach to methodology and their tools (with a focus on observation and interview): interpretative phenomenological analysis, discourse analysis, ethnographic research, action research and case studies, grounded theory, narrative analysis. Each presentation based on the scheme: evocation, brief theoretical basis, research questions, sample, data generation, process of analysis, presentation of outputs, examples of solutions, access limits, emphasis on differences from other types of research.
  • Seminars (á 2 hours): assignment, training and presentations of the interim solutions and the results of the semester task:
  • 1. assignment of a semestral task, establishing of working groups, the students then ensure contact with the informant / respondent (psychologist) for the semester task, find and record information about his / her workplace, negotiate the date of realization,
  • 2. principles and practice of observation and conducting interviews, planning interviews with informant / respondent according to the chosen methodological approach, preparing the structure of the interview, the students subsequently prepare the technical conditions for the interview (space, informed approvals, recording medium, etc.),
  • 3. Principles of transcription of the interview, demonstrations how to, students then conduct the interview and make their own transcription,
  • 4. examples of different types of interview analysis according to the main approaches, coding exposition in Word and Atlas.TI program, students then perform a training analysis of the interview conducted according to the selected qualitative approach,
  • 5-10. presentation of group solutions for a semester task, sharing experiences, discussion,
  • 11-12. consultation of solutions of individual two-semester projects, discussion of possible solutions and their methodological advantages and limit.
