- Course objectives
- The course deals with main phenomena of the development of Greek literature from the 16th to the 18th centuries, during the period of Turkish rule. Lectures will be supplemented by readings from Greek literature.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course, students will be able to understand main phenomena of the development of Modern Greek literature in the given period, main tendencies of literary development and to classify authors and works into literary context and characterise them.
- Syllabus
- Introduction, evaluation. Byzantine beginnings of modern literature.
- Three centres of Greek literature and culture after the fall of Byzantium: diaspora, islands, Ottoman empire.
- Early Cretan literature. Reading: Stefanos Sachlikis.
- The genre of katabasis in Byzantium and in Crete. Reading: Apokopos.
- Pastoral poetry and drama. Reading: Voskopula.
- Comedy, interludes. Reading: Fortunatos.
- Tragedy. Reading: Erofili.
- Religious drama. Reading: Thysia tu Avraam.
- Erotokritos.
- The Greek enlightenment.
- Folk song. Reading: Akritika.
