Course objectives
Knowledge of the basics and sentence structure of Classical Chinese.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course students will have knowledge of basic sentences constructions of Old Chinese and basic lexical knowledge for further study of Old and Literary Chinese. Students will be able to identify sinovietnamese part of the Vietnamese lexicon and recognize origin of idiomatic expressions chengyu (thành ngữ) in Classical Chinese. Students will be able to read with the help of dictionary exemplary texts analysed during lectures and provide their basic grammatical analysis.
Syllabus
  • The course has two alternative syllabi. In case, that students have basics of Modern Chinese, the course will base upon their initial knowledge of Chinese characters and their meanings in Modern Chinese. In this case the course will be based on a simplified but systematic explanation of Old Chinese grammar based on the system of T. N. Nikitina accompanied by reading and analysis of exemplary texts (selected from the Chrestomatija drevnekitajskich tekstov and further sources). The theoretical explanation of will present elementary constructions and complex constructions, explanations of other types of sentence constructions will be left to the Master degree programme. In the case, that students will not have sufficient basics of Modern Chinese (even though a basic knowledge of Chinese characters will be provided by Vu4 Introduction to the Chinese script for Vietnamese studies), the practical part of the course will be based on E. Haenisch's Lehrgang der Chinesichen Schriftsprache, which does not require a preliminary knowledge of Modern Chinese.
  • The explanation will be supported by references to the textbook: Drevnekitajskij jazyk (V. Krjukov), which represents a unique cross-cut of the historical development of Chinese language from the earliest period (jiaguwen) to the post-classical period.

  • 3. Elementary constructions 1: nominal sentence, verbal sentence (construction subject - predicate)
  • 4. Elementary constructions 2: verbs and adjectives in the construction with one object without preposition
  • 5. Elementary constructions 3: verbs and adjectives in the construction with one object with preposition
  • 6.-7. Elementary constructions 4: verbs of a common action, constructions with verbs directing two objects
  • 8. Elementary constructions 5: construction with two verbs
  • 9. Weakly subordinated elements of constructions
