- Course objectives
- main goal of the course:
practical knowledge of the medieval material culture (from 11th to the first half of the 16th century)
morphology, typology, chronology of artefacts and knowledge of the main groups of medieval artefacts (crafts, agriculture, trade, buildings, warfare, death and burials)
production places (medieval fields, smithies, smelting plants and many others) - Learning outcomes
- the student is able to:
recognize individual medieval artefacts and their fragments
divide them into their main material and functional groups and classes
apply the basic typological method
generally interpret their occurrence in archaeological contexts
describe the production technology and meaning of the artefact
chronologically classify the artefacts - Syllabus
- 1. definition of medieval material culture (types of artefacts and the main typological classes)
- 2. medieval glass and its production technology
- 3. medieval pottery and its production technology
- 4. medieval ceramics (tiles, stoves, ceramic art)
- 5. medieval agriculture (implements: plough, shovel, hoe, etc.)
- 6. village and its farmsteads: metal artefacts (nails, locks, keys)
- 7. smithing and weapons
- 8. mining and metallurgy
- 9. wooden artefacts and their production (axes, augers, saws, chisels)
- 11. textile production
- 12. bone and antler artefacts

- theoretical knowledge of the classification of artefacts, the presentations of artefacts using 2D documentation of artefacts (pictures), 3D-modelling or real artefacts, or their replicas
student is acquainted with the methods of production of artefacts: from the search for raw materials, to technological operations in their exploitation and application in various situations
student is acquainted with changes of the artefact in time and various social environments, its importance and meaning in archaeological situations and interpretation possibilities - Assessment methods
